In continuation to Consultation and Networking sessions, AWCCI held another session with members and a number of Afghan businesswomen from AWCCI’s database on July 8, 2019 at AWCCI main office. The purpose of this session was to meet Afghan businesswomen, getting them familiar with the requirements of candidacy for AWCCI 2019 Board of Directors election, obligations of the board and the process of election. Ms. Afsana Rahimi, Chair of AWCCI Ms. Manizha Wafeq, the President and Co-Founder of AWCCI, , Ms. Parwarish Oryakhail, AWCCI Business Development Services Director, Ms. Masooma Ibrahimi, AWCCI Board of Directors member, some of AWCCI provincial Board of Directors and more than 25 businesswomen and entrepreneurs were present in the sessions.
At First, Ms. Afsana Rahimi welcomed all participants. Subsequently, participants introduced themselves to each other and Ms. Wafeq, started the meeting. Ms. Wafeq talked about how AWCCI has come along the way and overcome obstacles. She also talked about AWCCI Database in which all information of around 1200 Afghan Women formal business-owners is written carefully and accurately.
After that Ms. Wafeq talked about the process of election, its requirements and the conditions of candidacy. She also stated that the Constitution, its system and the first elections were conducted in between March-October 2017. In the start of 2018, the first offices for assemblage for women were opened in Herat, Balkh, Nangarhar and Kandahar; and the members were elected. As a conclusion, 11 board of Directors from Kabul and 20 from other provinces were selected through a transparent process. On Dec 31st , 2018 the new law of the chambers regularity were changed.
Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MOIC) set up the new requirements of candidacy, stating that all chambers are required to follow up with the new rules. The candidacy fee raised for 30000 AFN in Kabul and 10000 AFN in Provinces. Furthermore, the candidate should have 5 of the members confirmations.
She elaborated the conditions as following:
- The candidate must be an Afghan citizen
- The candidate must respect Afghanistan’s constitution
- The candidate must not be a criminal
- The candidate must have higher education or 5 years’ experience in business
- The candidate must have business license.
- Familiarity with English language
Moreover, she added that the AWCCI board of Directors authorities and duties are:
- They are the second highest decision making authority in AWCCI
- Every two months conducts a meeting to discuss strategy, policies and plans of activities by AWCCI
- Has the right in making decision about recruitment of staff
- Representation and presentation of AWCCI at any level
- Absorption and attraction of sponsorships, financial and technical supports, memberships
Afterwards, Ms. Wafeq talked about the process of election. The first step is Admissions, and after that candidates will have a speech during the Elections Day. At the beginning of the elections the candidates must introduce themselves; subsequently, candidates must introduce their plans and should tell everyone about advantages they can bring to businesswomen through AWCCI. AWCCI membership card can be used as a voting card. In the Election Day everyone can vote from 1 candidate up to 15. There will be one Chairperson and 3 Vice Chairs who will be elected from the elected board afterwards.
At the end, Ms. Wafeq followed up with answering the questions and encouraging members who wanted to take part.
